Clutch & Gearbox FAQs: Warning Signs, How Long They Last, and What Replacement Involves
Updated: Aug 3
Clutch and gearbox problems tend to creep up gradually rather than happen overnight, so most drivers notice something feels 'off' for weeks before booking it in. Here's what to look out for.
Signs your clutch is wearing out
A slipping clutch usually shows up as engine revs rising without a matching increase in speed, particularly in higher gears or going uphill. Other signs include the biting point creeping higher up the pedal travel, a burning smell after hill starts or stop-start traffic, a spongy or unusually heavy pedal, and a judder as you pull away.
How long does a clutch last?
There's no fixed mileage — it depends far more on driving style than age. A clutch used mostly on motorways can comfortably pass 80,000 to 100,000 miles, while frequent stop-start town driving, towing, or riding the pedal in traffic can wear one out well under 40,000 miles. It's a wear item, not a fixed service interval, so we check it as part of any service and flag it early if it's on the way out.
Signs of a gearbox problem
Common warning signs include a whining or grinding noise that changes with road speed, difficulty selecting a gear or the car jumping out of gear on its own, a knocking noise when changing gear, and fluid underneath the car (gearbox oil is usually a darker red or brown, distinct from engine oil or coolant).
What does a clutch or gearbox replacement involve?
A clutch replacement means dropping the gearbox to access the clutch assembly, so it's a bigger job than most repairs — usually a full day's work rather than a same-day turnaround, and it's a good opportunity to replace the release bearing and, where fitted, the dual-mass flywheel at the same time rather than paying for the labour twice. Gearbox faults vary hugely in scope: sometimes it's a linkage or mount, sometimes an internal rebuild or replacement unit, so we'll always inspect and quote before any work starts.
If your clutch feels different lately, it's worth getting it looked at before it fails completely — a slipping clutch rarely fixes itself. Call 07311 226 868 or drive in at Unit 1D, 6 Greycaine Road, Watford WD24 7GP and we'll take a look.
