How Often Should You Check Your Tyres? A Watford Driver's Guide

Your tyres are the only part of your car actually touching the road, yet they're one of the most neglected things drivers check. Here's a simple routine to keep yours safe — and legal.

How often to check

As a rule of thumb, give your tyres a visual check every couple of weeks and before any long journey. Tread depth and pressure can change gradually, so a quick monthly check with a gauge catches problems before they become MOT failures or, worse, blowouts.

What to look for

  • Tread depth — the UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre; many garages recommend replacing nearer 3mm for safe wet-weather grip

  • Uneven wear — can indicate incorrect tyre pressure or wheel alignment issues

  • Cracks or bulges in the sidewall — a sign of structural damage that needs immediate attention

  • Correct pressure — check when tyres are cold, using the figures in your door sill or handbook

Why it matters for your MOT

Tyres are one of the most common MOT failure points. Low tread, damaged sidewalls, or mismatched tyres on the same axle will all fail the test outright. Catching these issues early means you can budget for a replacement rather than facing a surprise fail on test day.
