SIGNS YOUR AC NEEDS A REGAS
❄️ Air from your vents is not as cold as it used to be
❄️ Air conditioning takes much longer than usual to cool the cabin
❄️ AC blows completely warm air even on the coldest setting
❄️ You notice a musty or mouldy smell when the AC is on
❄️ The AC light flashes or the system cuts out intermittently
❄️ It has been more than 2 years since your last regas
❄️ Your car is due its MOT and you want to check everything is working
R134a vs R1234yf — WHICH DOES MY CAR USE?
Most cars built before around 2017 use R134a refrigerant; most cars from 2017 onwards use the newer R1234yf, which is required on all new vehicles sold in the EU and UK since 2017 for environmental reasons. Using the wrong gas can damage your system, so we always confirm the correct type for your make and model before starting — you don't need to know which one your car takes, we'll check for you.
If your car's air conditioning is not cooling as well as it used to, or stops working altogether on hot days, it almost certainly needs a refrigerant recharge (regas). Air conditioning systems naturally lose refrigerant over time — typically 10 to 15% per year — so even a well-maintained system will need a regas every 2 to 3 years. At Watford MOT Centre we regas car air conditioning systems using professional AC service equipment. We handle both the older R134a refrigerant and the newer R1234yf refrigerant used in most cars made after 2017. The whole process takes around 45 minutes and we test the system performance before and after to make sure it is working correctly.
