MOT Failed? Here's What Happens Next (And What It Might Cost)

Failing your MOT isn't the end of the world — it happens to a huge number of drivers every year, and most failures are far less serious (and far cheaper to fix) than people expect. Here's exactly what happens next, what it might cost, and how Watford MOT Centre handles it.

What happens immediately after a fail

If your car fails its MOT, you'll be given a VT30 fail certificate listing every defect found, split into categories: dangerous, major, and minor. At Watford MOT Centre, we walk you through this report in plain English before you leave — no jargon, no pressure, and no obligation to book repairs with us.

Can I still drive my car?

It depends on the defects found and whether your previous MOT has expired. If your car has dangerous or major faults and your old MOT has run out, you legally cannot drive it except to a pre-booked repair or retest appointment. If your MOT hasn't expired yet, you can usually keep driving until it does, but it's not advisable if the defects affect safety, such as brakes or steering.

How much will repairs cost?

Costs vary hugely depending on what's failed. Some of the most common MOT failures are quick, inexpensive fixes:

  • Blown bulbs or faulty indicators — often under £20

  • Worn wiper blades — a few pounds

  • Low tyre tread or damaged tyres — from £40 per tyre

  • Worn brake pads — typically £60–£120 per axle

More involved issues, such as suspension components, exhaust emissions faults, or structural corrosion, will cost more and may take longer to source parts for. The key is getting an honest, itemised quote before any work starts — which is exactly what we provide.

Your free retest

If you get your repairs done with us, you're entitled to a free retest within 10 days of the original failed MOT, so there's no second testing fee to worry about. Even if a vehicle is presented for retest the same day, many faults can be fixed and rechecked within hours.

Book your MOT or retest at Watford MOT Centre

Whether you need your first MOT, a retest after a fail, or just want a second opinion on a quote from elsewhere, Watford MOT Centre offers MOTs from £39, no appointment needed, with most tests completed in around 45 minutes. Walk in today at Unit 1d, 6 Greycaine Road, Watford WD24 7GP, or call 07311226868.
