5 Common MOT Failures and How to Avoid Them

Every year, thousands of MOTs fail on issues that are simple, cheap, and entirely avoidable with a five-minute check beforehand. Here are the five most common culprits we see at Watford MOT Centre, and how to stay ahead of them.

1. Lighting and signalling

Blown bulbs, foggy lenses, or a faulty indicator are consistently the single biggest cause of MOT failures nationally. Walk around your car and test every light, including number plate lights and fog lights, before your test.

2. Tyres

Worn tread, cuts, or incorrect pressure are another major failure point. Check tread depth and look for any visible damage on the sidewalls.

3. Brakes

Squealing, grinding, or a spongy pedal can all indicate worn pads, discs, or low brake fluid. These are safety-critical, so don't ignore early warning signs.

4. Windscreen and wipers

Chips or cracks in the driver's line of sight, and worn or split wiper blades, are easy to miss but quick to fail on.

5. Suspension

Worn shock absorbers or bushes can cause excessive bouncing or noise over bumps. These often build up gradually, so a pre-MOT check can catch them before test day.

Many of these issues take minutes to spot and pounds, not hundreds of pounds, to fix — if you catch them early. Bring your car in before your MOT is due and we'll flag anything likely to cause a fail.

Need a hand with any of this? Watford MOT Centre offers MOTs from £39 with no appointment needed, plus servicing, tyres, and repairs for all makes and models. Walk in at Unit 1d, 6 Greycaine Road, Watford WD24 7GP, or call 07311226868.
