DPF Cleaning Watford | Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning & Regeneration

If you drive a diesel and mostly do short, low-speed trips, a blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF) is one of the more common faults we see — and one of the more misunderstood. Here's what's actually going on.

What a DPF does

The DPF traps soot from the exhaust to keep emissions down. Under normal motorway-speed driving, the engine periodically burns that soot off automatically in a process called regeneration. The problem is mostly short journeys and stop-start town driving, which rarely get the exhaust hot enough for that to happen.

Signs your DPF is blocking up

Look out for a DPF or engine warning light on the dash, a noticeable drop in power or the car going into 'limp mode', increased fuel consumption, a strong smell from the exhaust, or the engine management light appearing during or after a failed regeneration attempt.

Cleaning versus replacement

A partially blocked DPF can often be cleaned or forced through a regeneration cycle, restoring normal running without the cost of a new part. If the filter has been blocked for a long time or has physical damage, cleaning won't be enough and replacement is the only real fix — we'll always diagnose which situation you're in before recommending anything.

Why it matters for your MOT

A missing, damaged, or clearly not-functioning DPF on a vehicle that should have one is an MOT failure point, and excessive smoke is checked as part of the emissions test. Sorting a blocked filter before it fails completely is usually cheaper and quicker than waiting for it to fail on the ramp.
