It's easy to lose track of your MOT date, especially if it doesn't fall at a memorable time of year. Here's how to check it in seconds, and what's actually at stake if it lapses.
How to check your MOT due date
You can check any UK vehicle's MOT status for free on the official GOV.UK MOT history checker using just the registration number. It shows the expiry date along with the full history of past tests and any advisories.
What happens if your MOT expires
Driving without a valid MOT (with very limited exceptions, such as driving to a pre-booked test) is illegal. You risk a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurance may be invalidated if you're involved in an accident while your MOT has lapsed.
When can you book your MOT?
You can have your MOT done up to a month (minus a day) before it's due, and the new expiry date will still be exactly 12 months from the old one. Booking early, rather than right at the deadline, also gives you breathing room to sort out any repairs without your car being off the road on the day it's needed.
No need to book ahead with us
Because we offer walk-in MOT testing with no appointment, you don't need to plan weeks in advance — just come in when it suits you, including last-minute tests before your MOT runs out.
