Tyre FAQs: Legal Tread Depth, How Long Tyres Last, and Budget vs Premium

Tyres are the only part of your car actually touching the road, so it's worth knowing the basics — here's what we're asked most often.

What's the legal minimum tread depth in the UK?

The legal minimum is 1.6mm, measured across the central three-quarters of the tyre's width and around its entire circumference — not just at one point. Driving on a tyre below this depth risks a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per illegal tyre, so it can add up quickly across four tyres. We'd recommend replacing well before you hit the legal limit, since wet-weather grip drops off noticeably from around 3mm.

How long do tyres actually last?

There's no single answer — it depends on mileage, driving style, wheel alignment and road surfaces, but a rough guide is 20,000 to 40,000 miles, or around 5 years, whichever comes first. Underinflated tyres, harsh braking and poor alignment all shorten that considerably, which is why we check pressure and tread as a matter of course during any visit.

Are premium tyres worth the extra cost over budget tyres?

It depends on how and where you drive. Premium tyres generally offer noticeably better wet braking distances, lower road noise and longer tread life, which can close the price gap over the tyre's lifespan. Budget tyres are a reasonable choice for lower-mileage cars or as a temporary fix, but we wouldn't recommend them as a permanent choice on anything driven regularly in winter conditions, given how much stopping distances can vary between budget and premium in the wet.
